La théologie de l’Eucharistie, sur laquelle portait le premier grand ouvrage de J.-M.R. Tillard, publié en 1964, devait par la suite garder une place fondamentale dans sa réflexion, en particulier dans son approfondissement de l’ecclésiologie de communion. L’article s’applique d’abord à le vérifier dans les entretiens (2000) et dans un cours inédit (1999) donnés par Tillard dans la toute dernière période de sa vie. Il retrace ensuite divers angles sous lesquels le mystère de l’Eucharistie a été abordé et approfondi dans ses travaux en ecclésiologie et dans le dialogue œcuménique.

Summary

The theology of the Eucharist was the subject of the first major work of Jean-Marie Roger Tillard published in 1964, and thereafter remained a fundamental theme in his thought, particularly in the development of his ecclesiology of communion. This article initially endeavors to verify this in discussions (2000) and in an unpublished course (1999) given by Tillard in the last years of his life. It then traces diverse perspectives through which the mystery of the Eucharist was approached and deepened in his work in ecclesiology and in the numerous ecumenical dialogues in which Tillard participated in his unique manner.

L’article porte sur la notion de conciliarité-catholicité, telle qu’entendue dans l’orthodoxie et telle qu’elle a été approfondie au cours des dernières décennies, à travers notamment les discussions et débats œcuméniques et l’élaboration de l’ecclésiologie de communion à laquelle a particulièrement oeuvré J.-M.R. Tillard. En relation avec les préoccupations mises de l’avant par ce dernier, il réfléchit à l’articulation de la notion et de la réalité de la conciliarité-catholocité avec d’autres, notamment celles d’Églises locales et de primauté.

Summary

This article explores the notion of conciliarity-catholicity, as it is understood in Orthodox theology and as it has been furthered in the last few decades, notably through ecumenical debates and in the development of communion ecclesiology. This was an area in which J.-M. R Tillard was particularly prolific. In relation to the concerns expressed by Tillard, this article reflects upon the notion and the reality of conciliarity-catholicity in addition to other concerns such as that of local churches and primacy.

The post-Vatican II history of Anglican-Roman Catholic relations can be traced through official dialogues and their resultant documents, through ecclesial reactions to and reception of these documents, through ecclesial practices and theological developments as well as through the presence and participation of dedicated ecumenists. Ecumenist Jean-Marie Roger Tillard significantly marked Anglican-Roman Catholic relations, employing various theological strategies toward the realization of full visible communion. In the face of today's difficult challenges Tillard's theology continues to offer impetus for further dialogue and occasion for reflection on ecclesial identity; his thought remains a resource for the hard work of ecumenism and hope for the future.

Summary

This article employs the ecclesiology of Jean-Marie Roger Tillard to address lacunae in the Vatican II teaching on the Office of Bishop. These lacunae have grave pastoral consequences as they affect the exercise of episcopal ministry. Two ambiguities in the Vatican II teaching explored in the article are 1) the apostolic life of the church and apostolic office and, 2) the bishop's relationship to the local church and to the college of bishops. The interrelated concepts of memory and reception in Tillard's ecclesiology and theology of ministry are developed in the light of current pastoral challenges and toward enunciating a post-Vatican II theology of episcopal ministry that resolves these ambiguities.

Cet article considère, à partir de l’ecclésiologie de Jean-Marie Roger Tillard, certaines lacunes de l’enseignement de Vatican II relatif au rôle de l’évêque. Ces lacunes entraînent de sérieuses conséquences dans l’exercice du ministère épiscopal. L’étude considère deux ambiguïtés de l’enseignement de Vatican II : a) la vie apostolique de l’Église et le ministère apostolique; b) la relation de l’évêque à l’Église locale et au collège épiscopal. Elle approfondit les notions corrélatives de mémoire et de réception dans l’ecclésiologie et dans la théologie des ministères de Tillard, à la lumière des défis pastoraux actuels, en vue d’en arriver à une théologie du ministère épiscopal qui contribue à résoudre ces ambiguïtés de Vatican II.

Aboutissement du programme des bâtisseurs du début du XXe siècle, Vatican II a été pour la génération qui a suivi, à laquelle appartenait de façon typique J.-M.R. Tillard, une référence et une base à partir de laquelle on pouvait penser et réfléchir. Pour la génération apparue au cours des années 1980, le concile Vatican II n’est ni un point d’arrivée ni un point de départ, ni un acquis à conserver ou à défendre ni un patrimoine ou un précieux héritage à faire fructifier, ni une référence pour penser le présent de l’Église et son devenir. Peut-il dire quelque chose à la génération née après le concile et ses réformes et marquée par la culture nouvelle?

The result of a building program at the beginning of the 20th century, Vatican II was a reference point and a base from which to think and reflect theologically for the generation that followed in its wake, the generation of J.-M. R. Tillard. For the generation born in the 1908s, Vatican Council II is neither a point of arrival nor a point of departure; neither a gain to conserve and defend nor a patrimony or precious inheritance to make fecund; neither a point of reference to think about the Church in the present or of the future. Can Vatican II say anything to a generation born after Council and its reforms, marked by a totally new culture?
